Do You Need To Pay Tax On US stocks in Singapore?

There is no capital gain tax for investing in US Stocks or Singapore stocks by the Singapore IRAS, however if you are in the business of trading in properties your gains maybe taxable under the category of “other income”.

As a non-residence of U.S. you will be exempted from U.S. capital gain tax, this means the profit you gain from your sale of the stocks is not taxed by the U.S. IRA.

When Do You Need To Pay Tax On US Stocks in Singapore?

The tax you’ll need to pay on U.S. stocks in Singapore is the dividend income you gain from U.S. company listed in the U.S. stock exchange. U.S. IRA will apply a 30% withholding tax on dividends since Singapore doesn’t currently have a tax treaty with the U.S.

The other common scenario where you will need to pay tax on US stocks is when you stay in the U.S. for more than 183 days during the taxable year.  You maybe subjected to 30% capital gain tax by U.S. where you will need to declare your Tax home accordingly.

According to U.S. IRS “your tax home is wherever you work.”
